About Us
Thank you for caring about our companion animals and wanting to learn more about the No Kill movement in Columbia! There are millions of people who love animals but are unaware of the practices at their local shelters, about the No Kill Model of sheltering, and its relevance on "quality of life" in a community.
No Kill Columbia is a grassroots, volunteer driven, 501c3 animal advocacy non- profit organization dedicated to saving lives of companion animals in our community. We are animal loving citizens, adopters, foster parents, past employees, volunteers and supporters for local animal organizations, who have witnessed too many innocent and adoptable animals taken needlessly, have united together and are determined that through awareness and education of the No Kill Movement, No Kill Columbia is within our reach.
Statistics display a 44-50% euthanasia rate at our local animal shelter for 2009, 2010, and 2011. As hard as the organization may try, following the present shelter model will produce the same numbers for years to come. These numbers are unacceptable when compared with municipal shelters in cities like Reno Nevada, Charlottesville Virginia, Ithaca New York, and Austin Texas, just to name a few, who have thrown out the “old school” way of sheltering, embraced the No Kill model, and now save over 90% or more of all animals in their open door facilities. Their success stories prove that you don’t need millions of dollars and a huge facility to save lives. What you do need is the right leader, who will rigorously implement each of the components of the No Kill equation with passion, creativity, and an unwavering belief that the lives of all animal companions who are adoptable and treatable are worth saving!
Each and every animal shelter and animal rescue organization play an important role in caring for our homeless pet population. No Kill Columbia will support all local facilities through promotion, adoption events, and fundraisers. We are not a No Kill shelter, we advocate for those who don't have a voice.
To aide in the reduction of unwanted puppies and kittens, No Kill Columbia will place an emphasis on funding for low-cost spay and neuter vouchers, with the vision of a high volume, low-cost spay and neuter clinic within our community. Presently, the Central Missouri Humane Society is the only facility which offers these services, often with a lengthy wait period due to the fact they sterilize their own animals before adoption which we applaud, as well as requests from area rescues and the public, with one veterinarian on staff. We look forward to providing low cost spay and neuter services to Columbia and Mid MO.

A No Kill community will protect and save the lives of animals like Leliana.

"My name is Leliana. I was only 5 months old when my 5 littermates and I were brought to the shelter. My mom’s family didn’t have her spayed and we were an “Oops!” Even though I had my siblings, the shelter was such a scary place. They decided that I was too shy and introverted. I was pulled from the litter and killed."
