No Kill Columbia Press Release
COLUMBIA, MISSOURI –January 22, 2013. No Kill Columbia (NKC), a local animal advocacy group, today announced the organization will open a spay and neuter clinic designed to combat the number of unwanted litters in order to save lives of companion animals. No Kill Columbia is a grassroots, volunteer driven, non-profit organization dedicated to saving lives of companion animals in local communities.
"Our goal is to make spay and neuter services affordable and easily accessible to all Mid-Missouri pet owners who might not otherwise be able to utilize this necessary service," stated Liz Burks, president of No Kill Columbia. "With thousands of dogs and cats losing their lives every year in Missouri shelters, this service is an essential and proactive solution to reducing intake at area shelters.”
The nationally recognized nonprofit, Humane Alliance, and their National Spay/Neuter Response Team (NSNRT) accepted NKC’s application to join their network of spay and neuter clinics. Humane Alliance’s NSNRT program began in 2006 as a mentor program guiding organizations in the self-sustaining operation of high-volume, high-quality, low-cost spay and neuter clinics. To date, the 110+ clinics in the program have sterilized over half a million pets reducing the number of animals crowding shelters.
The NKC Spay Neuter Project will be the fourth NSNRT clinic to open in the state of Missouri, joining clinics in St. Louis, Kansas City and Springfield. The clinic, projected to open in late 2013, will have the capability to perform over 8,000 surgeries annually and will serve more than 14 Mid-Missouri counties.
“We envision a community without homeless pets, so we are very excited to offer this service to Mid- Missouri,” said Burks. “Our partnership with the Humane Alliance will provide the operational foundation. Now, we need the support of Columbia and surrounding communities to make it happen!”
The Spay Neuter Project’s first fundraiser will be held on Thursday, February 28, 2013. The group will host a Spay-ghetti Dinner in honor of National Spay/Neuter Day at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Hall, 903 Bernadette Drive, from 5:30-8 pm.

No Kll Columbia Response to Central Missouri Humane Society's Announcement of New Director
No Kill Columbia is pleased by the announcement the Central Missouri Humane Society has selected Mary Pat Boatfield as the new executive director. Ms. Boatfield’s resume boasts many accomplishments in Ohio and Tennessee and we look forward to learning more about her animal welfare philosophy. In October 2011, No Kill Columbia asked the CMHS board of directors to hire an executive director who would lead CMHS in a No Kill direction. We are optimistic that CMHS has selected a candidate who will accomplish the adoption of all healthy and treatable animals in our community. We welcome Ms. Boatfield to Columbia, and it is our sincere hope that we can partner together along with the City of Columbia, area rescues and the community to transform Columbia, Missouri to a No Kill Community.
